What is a Service Dog?

Hi, I’m Kai, and I’m Michele’s service dog. I have an important job: helping Michele live her best life despite her health challenges. I’m not a pet—I’m a trained partner. I assist her with balance, alert her to migraines and fibro flares, and provide emotional support when things get tough. Dogs like me are life-changing, but none of it would be possible without the love and teamwork of my family, Michele and Bret.

Traveling with a Service Dog

Travel can be stressful, but Bret is the master of preparation. He makes sure Michele and I have everything we need, from my gear to travel checklists. Together, they’ve created resources to help other handlers travel confidently with their service dogs.

How to Start the Journey

Not every dog is cut out for this role, but that’s where Michele and Bret come in. They can help you figure out if your dog has what it takes to be a service dog or guide you on how to find the right dog to join your family.

Living small allowed them to focus on what mattered most: their family, their health, and their future.

Eve, Michele’s first service dog, played a huge role in her healing. But when Eve retired, I stepped up. Bret helped train me, always encouraging Michele when the process felt overwhelming. He’s not just Michele’s husband—he’s my teammate too. Bret takes care of the things Michele can’t, making sure our little family stays strong.

Every day, Bret is there for Michele, whether it’s helping her navigate the hard days or cheering her on when she tackles a new challenge. He’s also my favorite human for belly rubs—don’t tell Michele I said that!

Our story is about teamwork, love, and resilience. Bret’s devotion keeps us going, and together, we’ve built a life that’s all about thriving despite the obstacles.
